Department of Meteorology states that it apologises from the nation for dubbing the recent cyclone as Mahasen which affected Sri Lanka and several South Asian countries.

 

Addressing a media briefing held at the department this morning Meteorological Director General H.S. Kariyawasam said his Department had however no intention to discredit the good name of one of the renowned kings in the country.

 

He said 23 names including Mahasen were submitted to the subcommittee of the Board of Cyclones in 2000 and 2001 to be used for cyclones that are developed in the Indian Ocean Northern Zone. Accordingly, the recent cyclone was dubbed as Mahasen.
