The Ministry of Disaster Management says that apologies extended to the nation by the Department of Meteorology for naming a recent cyclone Mahasen does not suffice.
Secretary to the Ministry of Disaster Management Siththi Mareena Mohammed expressing her views during a media briefing which was held in Colombo today noted that the name list submitted for cyclones by Sri Lanka would be revised immediately.
Chief Sangha Nayaka of the North Central Province Venerable Siriketha Seevali Thero was one amongst many to oppose naming a cyclone ‘Mahasen’ – a historic name of a King who had rendered a yeomen service to the country.
Meanwhile Director General of the Department of Meteorology H.S. Kariyawasam who presided over a media briefing which was held at the Department premises apologized for having named the cyclone Mahasen.
Moreover the Secretary to the to the Ministry of Disaster Management Siththi Mareena Mohammed added that the name list submitted by Sri Lanka for cyclones would be revised aided by the academic assistance of those such as Professor J.B. Dissanayeke.
Speaking in this regard head of the Colombo universities Sinhala Faculty Professor J.B. Dissanayeke noted that it was befitting to name cyclones after the likes of demons who commit acts of destruction.
