Hazardous chemicals cause behind port cargo warehouse fire

Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardana says the investigations in to the fire at the CFS-01 store of the Colombo port revealed that a hazardous chemical was the cause to the fire.

 

Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo today he said that the company which imported this hazardous chemical had not informed so to the Customs.

 

The Minister said that the fire could have been prevented by storing such chemicals in hazardous goods units of the stores had the company informed it to the authorities.

 

Therefore the minister said that legal action will be taken against the importer of this hazardous chemical.

 

 

A fire broke in the CFS-01 store of the Colombo Port in the wee hours of last 24th.

 

Large stocks of electronic appliances, foot wear, ready-made garment worth 556 million rupees were destroyed in the fire.
