President calls for a report on how the public was informed of the disaster Hiru News exposure ignored; NFF charges.

The Department of Information stated that the President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera to submit a report on how the general public, including fishermen were informed about the inclement weather conditions on Saturday.

 

Minister Amaraweera said that the report will be submitted to the President within next 2 days.

 

However, the National Weather Service of the United States of America issuing a communiqué on May 21s, forecast about a possible cyclone situation to be hit in Sri Lanka.

 

Hiru news also revealed about the stormy weather at 2 previous occasions.

 

Meanwhile Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe while participating in an event at the Vishnu Temple in Devinuwara in Matara said that the disaster could have been mitigated had the weather officials followed the American weather forecast and taken precautionary measures.

 

At different media briefings held in Colombo today, Colombo Municipality Member of the National Freedom Front Mohamad Mussamil, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Disaster Management Minister Mahinda

Amaraweera expressed their views on the disaster.
