The Meteorology department states that there needs to be a separate institution to issue warnings and messages to fishermen.
Director General of the MET Department S R Jayasekara stated that it is not the responsibility of the met department to issue warnings to fishermen.
He stated that the department only analyses the details regarding the weather and provide technical details.
The Director General also gave several examples…..
According to yesterday evenings forecast The Meteorology Department said that it is still risky to venture into sea for fishing and other naval activities in the seas off the areas from Mannar to Pothuvil through Colombo and Galle and the speed of the wind in this area could rise up to about 70 kilometers per hour.
The forecast clearly instructed the fishermen not to venture into seas.
However, when we inquired the duty meteorologist last evening this is what she had to say…
Accordingly the views expressed by the duty meterologist and the communiqué issue by the met department were contradictory.
However the freshmen stated that early forecasts will help them to save their lives.
