Fishery unions are stating that a signal system should be established to warn anchored vessels and small ports regarding adverse changes in weather.

So far only 19 fishing ports have been supplied such early warning systems.

However, the number of anchoring and small ports established in the island is 900.

The national convenor of the All Island Common Fisheries Association, Rathna Gamage stated that the fishermen leaving the ports without such an early warning system are in danger at times when the weather changes.

The fisheries ministry showed that fishermen not wearing their life jackets contributed to the high number of deaths reported in the recent storm.

Our news team further inquired from the national convenor of the All Island Common Fisheries Association, Rathna Gamage regarding this.
