Colombo Additional Magistrate A.M. Sahabdeen ordered today to transfer DIG Vass Gunawardana from CID detention to remand prison and keep him in remand until 25 this month.
The order was given after examining DIG Gunawardena’s health condition while he is obtaining treatment for a sudden illness at Colombo National Hospital.
SSP attached to the CID Shani Abeysekera submitted a report of the progress of the investigations and a summary report to Colombo Additional Magistrate A.M. Sahabdeen.
DIG Gunawardana was arrested in connection with the conspiring to abduct and murdering of businessman Mohamad Siayam in Bambalapitiya.
Attorney-at-Law Ajith Pathirana appearing for suspected DIG Gunawardana told the court that keeping the DIG in the same prison with several inmates who were arrested by the DIG in the past would pose danger to the latter’s life.
Attorney-at-Law Nalinda Indratissa appearing for the interests of the murdered businessman had stated that he would not object remanding the suspect under necessary protection.
Later the suspected DIG’s lawyer said that his client was suffering from diabetes and hypertension. He also stated that the nature of taking the DIG into custody is also questionable.
The CID stated that they have unearthed more information about several other crimes allegedly committed by the suspects.
Meanwhile Nalinda Indratissa appearing for the victim told that there is possibility for the suspect to commit suicide and requested the court to take that situation into consideration.
