The Sri Lankan High Commissioner in the UK has requested from the British authorities to pay special attention to the security of the Sri Lankan Cricket team during the cricket match between Sri Lanka and India played in Cardiff today.
It is reported that LTTE sympathizers have planned to hold a protest in front of the grounds in Cardiff against the Sri Lankan cricket team.
Hence the Sri Lankan High Commission states that the security of the players may be threatened inside or outside the grounds.
Thus the High Commission has written to Scotland Yard requesting special security for the Sri Lankan cricket team.
Upon inquiry by our news team, the external affairs ministry’s secretary Karunathilaka Amunugama stated that the ministry has also requested the Sri Lankan high commission in the UK and Scotland Yard to take steps to ensure the safety of the Sri Lankan Cricket team.
LTTE sympathizers held protests in front of the Oval and Cardiff when Sri Lanka played Australia and New Zealand respectively during their Champions Trophy matches played recently.
Speaking further the external affairs ministry secretary stated that this fact was also mentioned in the letters sent to the high commission and Scotland Yard.
