An urgent meeting of the SLFP parliament group is being held to discuss about the 13th Amendment and the forthcoming Northern Provincial Council election.

A Government Senior Minister told our news team that the meeting being held at Temple Trees is chaired by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He said all SLFP parliamentarians are attending the meeting today.

Addressing a media briefing held in Colombo today, UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said that the government should take immediate actions to fulfill the promises it gave to the international community with regard to the 13th Amendment.

Former Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council and Provincial Councilor Sivanesaturai Chandrakanthan alias pilleyan says he is ready to join hands with any forces raising against the repealing of the 13th Amendment.

The Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provincial Councils passed resolutions yesterday in support of the government’s move to repeal 2 provisions of the 13th Amendment.

The new changes are supposed to prevent two or more provincial councils to be merged themselves into one administrative unit and enabling Parliament to make laws on subjects only with the approval from majority of the provincial councils instead of approval from all of them as set out in the present constitution.
