The first stage of the Sri Lanka’s largest cycle race – Tour de Hiru was successfully concluded at Balangoda this afternoon.

Tour de Hiru coincides with the 15th anniversary of Hiru FM and was organized by Hiru TV and Hiru FM.

About 150 contestants representing 3 armed forces, Police, Dehiwala Mt.Lavinia Urban Council, German Friendship Cyclists Club and several leading sports clubs in the island have been participating in Tour de Hiru this time.

With the starting signal given by Parliamentarian R. Dumindha Silva the first phase of the race which covered 137 kilometres started from Air Force grounds at 8.30 in the morning.

The race ran along the Galle Road via Dehiwala, Moratuwa, Panadura and turned on to Bandaragma road passing through Horana, Ingiriya, Kiriella and ended in front of the Bus Stand in Balangoda.

Sudeera Nilanga of Sri Lanka Police won the first stage of Tour De Hiru while Samantha Lakamal of Sri Lanka Air Force came in second followed closely by Charitha Fernando of Sri lanka army C group.

President of the Interim Cycling Committee Air Vice Marshal Gagan Bulathsinghala described the series of today’s events of Tour de Hiru to our news team.

The second stage of Tour de Hiru will start from Balangoda at 8.30am tomorrow.

It will cover 160 kilometers and scheduled to pass Pelmadulla, Ratnapura, Eheliyagoda, Avissawella, Hanwella, Kaduwela, Yakkala, Nittambuwa and Attanagalla before end up at Kirindiwela town.
