The manager of the Deraniyagala Nuriwatta Tea Estate died after he was attacked by an unidentified gang with sharp weapons this morning.
Deraniyagala Police said that two other persons who received severe injuries in the attack were admitted to Deraniyagala hospital, and later transferred them to Karawanella hospital for further treatment.
However no suspect has been arrested in this connection.
Commenting on the incident, lawyer of the Plantation Company which owned the Nuriwatte Estate A.S.M. Misba said that certain local politicians had been intimidating the estate administration over the years.
He said this untoward incident took place consequent to such activities of the local politicians in the area.
Our news team inquired from the Deraniyagala Seat Organizer of the SLFP Deputy Minister of Livestock and Rural Community Development H. R. Mithrapala regarding the accused former Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, Anil Champika Wijesinghe.
In response the deputy minister stated that based on the actions of the former chairman, he was denied nomination for the previous Provincial Council Election.
Upon inquiry by our news team from the chairman of the Sri Lanka Planters Association Nisala Jayawardena regarding this incident, he stated that the government needs to take steps to ensure the safety of estate workers.
