The CID informed Court today that they would arrest the son of former DIG Vass Gunawardana who was in remand in connection with conspiring to kidnap and murder businessman Mohamad Siyam.

The CID also informed the Court that Vass Gunawardana’s son is currently in hiding and evading arrest.

The murder case of businessman Mahamad Siyam was taken before the Colombo Additional Magistrate A.M. Sahabeen today.

The CID told Court that the detectives went thrice to Vass Gunawardana’s house and tried to arrest his son but at each time the suspect’s wife Shyamalee Gunawardana Perera interrupted the officers and disturbed the investigations.

SSP Shani Abeysekera told the Court that although Shyamalee Gunawardana behaves like a kitten before the Court, one would see her true character when goes to her home.

The CID has checked several houses of Vass Gunawardana at Wattala, Hendala and Maradana.

The lawyers of Vass Gunawardana informed the Court that although the suspects were arrested under Prevention of Terrorism Act, the statements from the suspects were made under the Penal Code.

They argued that investigations cannot be initiated under two different legal procedures against one suspect.

The lawyers requested the Court to transfer the other suspects from CID detention to the remand prison, if the investigations are supposed to be continued under the Penal Code.

The CID informed the Court that the orders to detain the suspects were given by the President in his capacity as Defence Minister.

They informed the Court that the documents with that regard have also been submitted to the Court.

At that instance, the Magistrate informed the CID to counsel the Attorney General and file an answer to the suspect’s allegations.

Meanwhile SSP Shani Abeysekera informed the Court that the intimidations on him while investigating this case has increased.

It revealed that when the former DIG came to the CID to give a statement at the first time, he came in his uniforms.

The CID officer said that the threats made by the former DIG at that occasion cannot be taken for granted.

The house of Sub Inspector Bamunusinghe, another suspect of this case and currently under CID detention was checked and the CID sleuths found a magazine and 10 bullets of ammunition.

Meanwhile a tense situation erupted in the Court premises today when a woman blamed former DIG Vass Gunawardana as he was trying to get into the Black Maria.

Later it revealed that the son of this woman was arrested by the Colombo Crime Division on the 24th of June in 2009.

The woman further accused that her son was allegedly murdered while he was in police custody on July 1st in the same year, and she blamed former DIG for his connection to the murder of her son.
