5 killed in motor accidents within 12 hours

5 persons were killed and 32 others injured in 3 motor accidents occurred during the last 12 hours in Gampola, Ulapane, Polonnaruwa and Galewela areas.

 

Among the dead was Assistant Director of the Hatton Education Circuit Badra Jayaweera.

 

The victim was traveling with her Director and several others to participate in a meeting in Kandy when the van in which they were traveling collided on a parapet wall near the Muslim Vidyalaya at Ulapane in Gampola this morning.

 

The second fatal accident occurred at Kotaleeya in Manampitiya on Polonaruwa Galewela road, 3 persons including the driver of the bus were killed after their vehicle collided on a road-side tree this morning.

 

18 passengers who received injuries in the accident are still receiving treatment at the Polonnaruwa Hospital.

 

The bus was transporting a group of people to Batticaloa from a Samurdhi meeting held in Colombo.

 

The deceased were identified residents of Kalavanchikudi and Valachchenai areas.

 

Meanwhile the 5th person was killed and 10 others including 4 women were injured when a private bus and a Tipper collided on head near the Office of the District Medical Officer in Galewela this morning.
