The Ministry of Health has conducted a survey on a variety of plants present in the Western & Central provinces which are conducive for the breeding of mosquitoes.
The survey conducted centered around the districts of Gampaha, Kandy & Nuwara Eliya.
Accordingly several plant varieties have been identified as ‘conducive’ towards the breeding of mosquitoes.
The survey has also revealed that pineapple varieties are conducive by 46 percent towards the breeding of dengue mosquitoes.
Moreover plants belonging to the bromeliad plant family as well as tree hollows have been found to be conducive for mosquito breeding by 47 & 42 percent respectively while the pandan leaf plant has been found to be conducive by 51%.
