The Supreme Court decided today to consider the special petition filed by the Attorney General on the Parliament Select Committee which removed former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake from her position.

The Supreme Court had earlier issued a writ over the PSC report and the Attorney General filed the special petition today challenging that writ order.

The Attorney General’s petition will be taken for hearing on the 25th of September.

Lawyers M.A. Sumandiran and J.C. Weli Amuna had filed an objection motion against this petition earlier but they were rejected by the Supreme Court.

The motion filed earlier on behalf of PSC members and MPs Vijitha Herath and R. Sampandan was submitted again today but it was rejected.

After the rejection of the motion, lawyer M.A. Sumandiran expressed his views to our news team.

Other 4 fundamental rights petitions against the removal of former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake were submitted to the Supreme Court today.

Petitioners Mahinda Jayasinghe, Janaka Adhikari, Chandragupta Tenuwara and lawyer Elmo Perera requested in their petition that the Standing Orders are not law therefore the PSC should be declared null and void.

Meanwhile the Centre for Policy Alternative filed another petition today challenging the appointment of Mohan Peries to the post of Chief Justice after the removal of Shirani Bandaranayake.

The Supreme Court fixed the petition to be heard on the 25th of this month.

Supreme Court Judges Saleem Masoor, Chandra Ekanayake, Sathya Hettige, Eva Wanasundera and Rohini Marasinghe considered all the petitions today.

Meanwhile former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake presented before the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption over allegations that she had acquired property through illegal means.

It is reported that her statement was made for a period of over 2 hours.
