The Ampara – Padiyathalawa Mahaweli farmers engaged in a protest in the Padiyathalawa town this morning.

The farmers stated that they were engaging in a protest against the Mahaweli Authority acquiring 5 traditional Mahaweli cultivation land plots.

The farmers alleged that the Mahaweli Authority is acquiring these lands in which traditional crops were cultivated to grow rubber trees.

Our news team inquired from the resident Mahaweli Project Office regarding the allegation made by these farmers.

In response a senior officer in the office stated that the lands are being surveyed in order for deeds to be given for the lands in question.

Speaking further he stated that lands are not being acquired by force to cultivate rubber.
