UK cautions Sri Lanka while English parliamentary delegation expected in the island tomorrow

The Ministry of External Affairs states that a British Parliamentary delegation is expected to arrive in the island tomorrow.

 

According to the Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs Karunathilleke Amunugama the delegations is due to tour various parts of the island during their visit.

 

The group consists of 5 delegates representing the Conservative & Labour parties.

 

The delegates meanwhile are scheduled to hold discussions with the President, Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa & Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Peiris.

 

The group is also due to hold discussions with the leader of opposition & various other political party representatives.

 

The delegations visit has been organized by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Summit as well as the British High Commission in Colombo.

 

Meanwhile taking on Sri Lanka in the British parliament last week Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Alistair Burt has raised concerns regarding the islands human rights record & has warned of severe consequences if measures are not taken to redress such concerns.

 

He has also expressed hope that polls in the North would be conducted in a free & fair manner.

 

Failing to do so Alistair Burt has warned that a tough stance would be adopted against Sri Lanka during next years UN Human Rights Council session.
