President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed his Secretary Lalith Weeratunga to appoint a commission to look into the incidents of disappearance that are reported to have taken place during the 30 years of conflict.

The President's move to appoint such a commission is a clear indication of his unwavering commitment to ensure that Human Rights are well protected in the country.

President Rajapaksa appointed the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission in May 2010 to investigate alleged human rights violations during the conflict.

The Commission while stressing that Sri Lanka's military has not deliberately targeted civilians recommended in its report that the government should appoint a special commissioner to look into the alleged disappearances and provide material to the Attorney General's Department to initiate criminal proceedings as appropriate.

The government has already implemented almost all recommendations of the LLRC.
