At a press conference after the meeting, the secretary general of the Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma, has stated that no member government had indicated remotely that it wished to change the venue.

He also defended the CHOGM decision, saying that he had found Sri Lanka to be engaged and willing to improve itself through measures such as institution-building.

Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma has also denied suggestions that the Commonwealth risked compromising its credibility by refusing to take Colombo to task over accusations of war crimes, torture and institutional corruption.

The Secretary General of the Commonwealth made these statements while speaking to the media after the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group meeting held in London yesterday.

Although Sri Lanka was not on the agenda, the issues regarding the country were brought up by Canada.

Speaking at the meeting the Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird stated that he is concerned over the breakdown of democracy and rule of law in Sri Lanka.

Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma had given assurances regarding Sri Lanka hosting the CHOGM summit as a reply to the concern raised by the Canadian Foreign Minister.
