Chief Incumbent of the Galoluwa Sri Sambodhi Vihara Venerable Theripaha Siridhamma Thero states that if a proper solution is not found for the Weliweriya – Rathupaswala drinking water crisis, the thero will enter into another fast unto death.

 

The Thero who had begun a fast unto death on a previous occasion as well, had concluded the fast after the authority took steps to close down the factory and provide drinking water to the residents of the region.

 

Speaking at a press conference held this morning Chief Incumbent of the Galoluwa Sri Sambodhi Vihara Venerable Theripaha Siridhamma Thero expressed the following views regarding the incident that took place day before yesterday.

 

 

The Army Commander has appointed a 5 member committee to investigate the conduct of the army acted during the Weliweriya incident.

 

Speaking to our news team Army Media Spokesperson Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya stated that the committee will issue a report regarding the conduct of the army during the incident in two weeks.

 

 

Meanwhile, 8 individuals who were injured during the incident are still receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

 

The OIC of the Weliwerya Police Station, who was receiving treatment there, has been transferred to the police hospital.

 

However hospital sources state that the condition of a 19 year old youth who is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit is critical.

 

The police state that the situation in the region is calm at the moment.

 

However, the Ministry of Economic Development states that both short term and long term solutions to the drinking water crisis in the Rathupaswala region have already been put into action.

 

A number of solutions were put into action following the meeting held at the Gampaha District Secretary’s office under the patronage of the Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapakse.

 

Minister Rajapakse expressed the following views at the conclusion of the meeting.
