2 die in accident on expressway

A 24 year old woman and a 36 year old man have died as a result of an accident that occurred along the Southern Expressway near the 51st kilometre post in Welipenna.


3 others who were injured were admitted to the Nagoda hospital and according to a hospital spokesperson all 3 are in critical condition.


The deceased are said to be hailing from the Matara – Akuressa region.


The police media unit stated that the accident had occurred when the vehicle they were travelling in the direction of Kottawa from Pinnaduwa had lost control at high speed and collided with the safety railing.


7 fatal accidents have been reported this year along the Southern Expressway and the number of fatalities is 9.
