The Ministry of External Affairs in India states that over 100 Indian fishermen are in Sri Lankan custody.

Indian Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid stated that according to information available, as of 30th of July, there are 114 Indian fishermen and 21 Indian fishing vessels in Sri Lankan custody.

Indian Minister of External Affairs also stated that there are also 14 Indian fishermen and 4 boats in the custody of Sri Lanka on charges of smuggling narcotics and contraband.

Minister Kurshid further reiterated that the Indian Government attaches high importance to the welfare, safety and security of Indian fishermen and that as soon as reports of apprehension of Indian fishermen are received by the Government it has utilizing diplomatic channels, immediately and consistently taken up the matter for their expeditious release and repatriation with the Governments concerned.

He also stated that the matter has also been taken up during bilateral meetings at various levels.

Our news team inquired from the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources regarding this.

In response deputy minister of fisheries and aquatic resources Sarath Kumara Gunarathne stated that steps have been taken to produce the Indian fishermen before courts and subsequently free them.
