Archaeologists of the University of Kelaniya have unearthed evidence of a 5000-year-old civilization at Haldummulla in Badulla.

The excavation of Hunugala-gala cave at Wa Eliya in Haldummulla was carried out by a research group led by Professor Raj Somadeva of the Post Graduate Institute of University of Kelaniya.

The excavations which include some remains of clay pots, grinding mortars and fire stones have indicated the mankind which lived in this area had undergone a transition from their hunting lifestyle to agricultural one.

Professor Somadeva said that his team would expect to continue further research on the findings at Haldummulla.
