United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner Navaneedan Pillay will visit Sri Lanka on August 25th on a week-long visit to take stock of the country’s progress on reconciliation since the end of the war.

 

On the 29th she is scheduled to meet President’s Special Envoy on Human Rights and Minister of Plantation Industries Mahinda Samarasingha.

 

She will also undertake a visit to the North and East and meet government members and political party representatives.

 

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said Sri Lanka is looking forward to UN Human Rights chief Navi Pillay’s visit and was hopeful that she would provide a balanced and objective report on the island to the UN Human Rights Council’s next session in September.

 

 

Minister Samarasingha further stated that he is ready to point out any shortcomings in the report that will be presented by the high commissioner regarding Sri lanka during the next Geneva human rights session.

 

 

During a UNP media briefing held in Colombo today a journalist queried whether the UNP is going to meet Navaneedan Pillai.

 

In reply UNP General Secretary MP Thissa Aththanayaka had this to say....

 

 

Minister Dallas Allahaperuma addressing a UPFA meeting also spoke about Navaneedan Pillai’s scheduled visit.
