Instances of election violence increase to 149; Police continues investigations regarding Thondaman, Digambaran clash

149 complaints regarding election violence has been received by the special complaints unit established at the elections secretariat as of now.

 

A spokesperson for the elections secretariat stated that a majority of the complaints were with regard to using state property for propaganda activities.

 

29 complaints regarding the use of government vehicles, 22 complaints regarding utilizing state officials for election related activities and 7 complaints of using state buildings for election activities are amongst those complaints.

 

The highest number of complaints has been received from the Kurunegala district and that number currently stands at 42.

 

In addition 25 complaints from the Matale district, 18 complaints from the Kandy district and 17 complaints from the Nuwara Eliya district have also been received.

 

The lowest number of complaints has been reported from the Northern Province.

 

However the elections secretariat states that it is yet to receive a complaint regarding the clash that occurred between a group of supporters of the Ceylon Workers Congress and a group of supporters of the National Workers Union in the Nuwara Eliya – Hatton 0 Dimbulapatha region.


However the police media unit stated that 14 vehicles were damaged as a result of the clash and that several police teams have been deployed to conduct investigations into the incident.

 

The deputy secretary of the CWC M. Shaktivel stated that a firearm was discharged during the clash as well.
