37 houses were completely destroyed as a result of a fire that broke out in a row of wooden houses in the Gemunupura region in Mattakkuliya.
Around 200 persons were displaced as a result of the fire including 68 children.
While no one was injured in the blaze, a kerosene lamp toppling over in one of the houses has been the cause of the fire.
Police stated that the fire was extinguished with the help of fire fighters and residents.
The police further stated that the occupants of the 37 houses have been temporarily housed in the Gemunupura mosque.
Residents affected by the fire expressed these views.
Meanwhile, Colombo District Parliamentarian R Dumindha Silva also visited the location to look in to the grievances of those affected by the fire.
The Parliamentarian stated that immediate steps will be taken to provide relief to those affected by the fire.
