The new Oluvil Port Development project constructed at a cost of 7000 million rupees was vested in the public by President Mahinda Rajapaksa Today.
The Fishing Harbour and the Commercial Harbour which began in 2008 under the Nagenahira Navodaya programme includes construction of both a commercial port and a basin for fishing vessels.
During the first phase, two breakwaters will be constructed.
During the second phase, dredging will be undertaken to enable the port to handle vessels of up to 16 thousand tons.
The completion of the harbour is expected to boost economic infrastructure activities in the Eastern Province.
Meanwhile President Mahinda Rajapakse said that it is the intention of the government to create a peaceful country where all races can live together in harmony.
