Children under 13 years of age have been banned from being entered into sport events with the intention of obtaining 1st, 2nd or 3rd place.

 

The Ministry of Education stated that the cabinet paper presented in this regard was approved by the cabinet.

 

Deputy Director of the Sports Unit of the Ministry of Education J. K. Jayasekara stated that the physical strength of children wane due to certain coaches training children under 13 years of age to achieve 1st, 2nd or 3rd places.

 

As a result of this children under 13 years of age will not be entered in zonal, divisional and inter house sports meets with the intention of obtaining places.

 

However, children will not be denied the opportunity to take part in sporting events.

 

Speaking further Deputy Director of the Sports Unit of the Ministry of Education J. K. Jayasekara stated that if the children under 13 years of age taking part in sports meets meet certain benchmarks in their respective disciplines they will be issued certificates.
