Video: High voter turnout of 62% in the North - 60% in Central Province - 55% vote in North Western Province

Polls to elect 142 members for the Provincial Councils in the North, North Western and Central Provinces were held from 7AM to 4PM today.

 

3 thousand 785 candidates representing 126 political parties and 75 independent groups contested in today’s Provincial Council elections.

 

56 members for the Central Province, 36 for the North and 50 for the North Western province will be elected.

 

District Secretaries say that voter turnout was high in the North where a provincial council election was being held for the first time.

 

Voter turnout in Jaffna was at 52%, while 65% had cast their vote in Vavunia.

 

Voter turnout in Mannar stood at 70% while 60% of votes were cast in the Kilinochchi district.

 

The voter turnout in Mullaitivu stood at 63% while 55% of votes in the Nuwara eliya district were also cast.

 

Voter turnout in Kandy was between 55 to 60% while in Matalae around 60% of votes had been cast.

 

Kurunegala district reported a voter turnout of 54% while in Puttlam it was 51%.

 

Accordingly the voter turnout in the Northern Province stood at 62%, 57.5 % in the Central Province and 54.5 % in the North Western Province.
