The United States has urged the Sri Lankan government to extend full support to the new civilian administration in the northern region.

State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said yesterday since people of Sri Lanka have chosen provincial councils to represent their interests, it is incumbent upon the Government of Sri Lanka to support the new civilian leadership of the provinces.

Psaki said in a statement that US urge the Government of Sri Lanka to take advantage of this opportunity to expand efforts toward greater reconciliation by working with the newly elected Northern Provincial Council.

The Commonwealth Polls Observers say that about 67 percent polls turnout of the 5 districts in the Provincial Council election is a step towards democracy.

The polls delegation also stated that they are satisfied with the facilities provided for the voters to enable them to cast vote.

The delegation report on their observation from September 17th to 21st is expected to hand over to the Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma in the next few days.

Meanwhile addressing a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday delegation head of the South Asian Polls Observers Association and former head of the Indian Election Commission M. Gopalaswamy said that the overall election process is satisfactory.
