Noting that the Indian government is working hard to release fishermen from Sri Lanka, Union shipping Minister G.K. Vasan told that two special officers would be sent to the Indian Embassy in Sri Lanka to facilitate the release of fishermen.

He added that the embassy is extending all help to the fishermen jailed in Sri Lanka.

The Indian government is very particular that such detention of fishermen, capture and arrest of fishermen should not continue.

He noted that fishermen held captive in Sri Lanka are mainly from Rameswaram, Theni and Thoothukudi districts.
