A crisis has emerged within the Tamil National Alliance with regard to the ministerial portfolios of the Northern Provincial Council.

The leader of TELO Wanni District Parliamentarian Selvam Adeikkalanadan is prepared to resign from the leadership of the party as of now.

He stated that during the election period he had stated that he would obtain a ministerial portfolio for the Wanni district after winning the election.

However, he states that currently it seems that portfolio will be given to M. K. Sivajilingam of the Jaffna district.

Speaking further to our news team Wanni District Parliamentarian Selvam Adeikkalanadan stated that his decision to resign from the leadership of TELO has been based on his inability to serve the Wanni public.

However, another special discussion is scheduled to take place this evening between the leaders of the Tamil National Alliance regarding the ministerial portfolios of the Northern Provincial Council.

Saturday , 05 October 2013 - 7:39 AM

The Tamil National Alliance will meet today as well to take a final call on appointing Ministers for the Northern Provincial Council.

Constituent parties of the TNA, namely PLOTE, EPRLF, TELO and Illangai Thamil Arasu Kachchi have been requested to nominate suitable representatives for Ministerial positions of the Council.

TNA Chief Ministerial elect C V Vigneswaran is scheduled to take oaths before the President day after tomorrow.

He also shared views with our news team regarding today’s meeting at which a final decision will be taken on Ministerial positions.

However, Member of TELO M K Sivajilingam said that NP Chief Minister and Councillors should take oaths before R Sambanthan.

Wigneshwaran to be sworn in before President

Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister-elect C.V. Wigneshwaran of the TNA has decided to take oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

TNA MP Suresh Premachandra said that the party made the decision final during a meeting held this morning.

Earlier TNA Leader MP R. Sambandan met the President at Temple Trees and the duo had discussions on the Northern PC Chief Minister’s sworn in ceremony as well.

Meanwhile a TNA spokesman told our news team that the leaders of the TNA coalitions except the Tamil Arasu Kachchi to which R. Sambandan gives leadership have vehemently objected to the decision concluded between the President and the TNA Leader.

Later TNA Leader R. Sambandan had elaborated the coalition leaders the real circumstances that the TNA would have to work in harmony with the government in order to ensure successful functioning of the Northern PC.

He has also convinced the coalition leaders that the Northern PC needs to attract the assistance of the international community as well in the future.

Meanwhile, no agreement was reached during the discussion held today regarding exchanging Northern Provincial Council portfolios.

However, a decision has been made for the Northern Provincial Council ministers to be sworn in before chief minister C. V. Wigneshwaran on the 11th of this month.

Although discussions were held between the TNA leaders regarding exchanging ministerial portfolios on several previous occasions, those discussions did not yield an agreement.

Leaders of the PLOTE, EPRLF, TELO and the Illangei Tamil Arasu parties which comprise the Tamil National Alliance were told to nominate their representatives for the ministerial portfolios.

Accordingly TELO had nominated M. K. Sivajilingam and PLOTE had nominated Dharmalingam Siddharthan.

The EPRLF had refrained from naming their nominees on the basis that the ministerial portfolios were not named while the Tamil Arasu party has nominated two names.

Speaking to our news team former TNA parliamentarian and media spokesperson M. K. Sivajilingam stated that due to the prevailing situation, the leaders of the TNA are scheduled to meet again tomorrow for another discussion in this regard.

Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference held today in Colombo, general secretary of the UPFA Minister Susil Premjayantha stated that the government is prepared to work together with the administration in the Northern Provincial Council.
