The UNP has decided to boycott the inaugural meeting of the CHOGM tomorrow. UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a media briefing held at the UNP Headquarters Sirikotha today that the Leadership Council took this decision.

Earlier, the UNP had decided to participate in the CHOGM.

The General Secretary said however the party took into consideration the incidents that took place yesterday and today, and decided to boycott the summit.

The UNP leadership committee began its activities today at the party headquarters in Sirikotha under the auspices of opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe and chairman of the committee Karu Jayasuriya.

A protest was organized by the Collective to build the Nation in front of the UNP party headquarters in Sirikotha against the Human Rights Summit organized by the Movement for Unity lead by the UNP.

At this moment a group of individuals who were within the party headquarters also proceeded to protest against those who were engaging in the protest against the summit which lead to a tense situation.

At this time a group of Buddhist monks lead by the secretary of the Bodhu Bala Sena Organization venerable Galagodaththe Gnanasara thero entered the UNP party headquarters.

They had claimed that pictures that were detrimental to their organization were being displayed at the Human Rights exhibition which was being held parallel to the Human Rights summit.

At this moment a group of supporters protested against the Buddhist Monks representing the Bodhu Bala Sena Organization and subsequently the monks were escorted out of the UNP party headquarters by the supporters.

Following these incidents UNP General Secretary Parliamentarian Thissa Attanayaka had convened a special press conference at the UNP party headquarters in Sirikotha.

Speaking during the press conference MP Attanayaka stated that the UNP took a decision to boycott CHOGM 2013 after taking into consideration the events that transpired during yesterday and today.

The Bodhu Bala Sena Organization had also convened a press conference this afternoon to express its opinion regarding the incident that took place today at the UNP party headquarters.

Fractional fights are over; says Ranil;Protests continues in front of Sirikotha.

Opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe states that the time has come for everyone in the party to forget factions and come together.

He made this statement while speaking at the inaugural meeting of the UNP leadership committee held at the party headquarters in Sirikotha today.

The chairman of the UNP leadership committee Karu Jayasuriya also took over his duties during the meeting in which 7 out of the 9 members of the committee took part.

However, UNP parliamentarians Sajith Premadasa and Thalatha Athukorala who refused membership of the leadership committee were not present at this moment.

Addressing the meeting after taking over duties as chairman of the committee, parliamentarian Karu Jayasuriya stated that invitations will be extended to those who have left the party for various reasons to rejoin the party.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Summit organized by the Movement for Unity lead by the UNP is being held for the 2nd day at the party headquarters in Sirikotha.

The Association to Protect the Country which held a protest yesterday against this summit, held another protest today as well.

Several protestors had even proceeded to throw stones at the party headquarters during the protest.

UNP Leadership council meets for the first time today; a complaint from Ranil to CHOGM.



Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says that he will take steps to inform the CHOGM steering committee about the attempt to attack his official vehicle and himself.

The Human Rights Summit organized by the Movement for Unity headed by the United National Party parallel to CHOGM 2013 was declared open by the opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe yesterday.

Prior to the inauguration of the summit named the ‘2013 Human Rights Festival’ the Association to Protect the Country staged a protest in front of the UNP party headquarters in Sirikotha.

Those protesting stated that this summit was one that was against the country.

Members of several political parties including the UNP as well as members of several NGOs participated in this conference.

Our reporter said that photographs of persons gone missing and photographs relevant to the Rathupaswala incident too were included in the human rights exhibition held there.

Similarly several foreign journalists too had come to cover the occasion.

Meanwhile the UNP leadership council is scheduled hold its first meeting today.

That will be at the Sirikotha party headquarters.

While assumption of duties by MP Karu jayasuriya as leadership council chairman will take place on this occasion, discussion is scheduled to be held today with regard to the procedure of subsequent actions.

  

Meanwhile UNP sources said that it was not sure whether MPs Sajith Premadasa and Thalathaa Athukoraala who resigned from the leadership council would participate in today’s leadership council meeting.

Human Rights Ceremony initiated by the Movement for Unity headed by the UNP begins

The Human Rights Summit organized by the Movement for Unity headed by the United National Party parallel to CHOGM 2013 was declared open by the opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe this afternoon.

Prior to the inauguration of the summit named the ‘2013 Human Rights Festival’ the Association to Protect the Country staged a protest in front of the UNP party headquarters in Sirikotha.

Those protesting stated that this summit was one that was against the country.

An exhibition regarding human rights is also included in the summit which will be held during today and tomorrow.

Our correspondent covering the summit stated that the exhibition includes pictures of those who have disappeared and pictures regarding the Rathupaswala incident.

Several foreign journalists were also present during this moment.

However, expressing his views after declaring the summit open, opposition leader Ranil Wickramasinghe stated that while he was arriving at Sirikotha his vehicle was attacked by the protestors.
