Heir to the British throne Prince Charles and his wife the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles arrived in the island this afternoon to take part in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

They arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport at approximately 4.15pm this afternoon via private jet.

A number of dignitaries including Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva and British High Commissioner for Sri Lanka John Ranking and Sri Lankan High Commissioner for Britain Dr. Chris Nonis were at the airport to welcome the crown prince and the duchess.

Prince Charles, who is celebrating his 65th birthday today has visited Sri Lanka in 1998 and 2005 previously.

However this is the first time the Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker Bowles is touring Sri Lanka.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will begin at 9.30am tomorrow under the patronage of Prince Charles at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre.

The first session of the summit will take place at the BMICH under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapakse.

After taking part in the opening ceremony Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla Parker Bowles are scheduled to engage in a tour of Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

Meanwhile, state leaders from Cyprus, Tanzania, Malta, Lesotho, Solomon Islands, Bahamas, Ghana, Namibia, Vanuatu, Saint Kitts and Nevis and the prime minister of Swaziland arrived in the island to take part in CHOGM 2013.

Local Civil Organizations are considering boycotting the handing over ceremony of the draft resolution to the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers.

The draft was prepared during the sessions of the Commonwealth Peoples Forum which was held at Hikkaduwa from November 10 to November 13.

Before the conclusion of the Forum, British State Minister of Foreign and Commonwealth Office Hugo Swire has criticized Sri Lanka and the Maldives without taking permission from the Forum officials.

Sub Committee Chairman of the Commonwealth Peoples Forum Dr. Lalith Chandradasa said that discussions are now going on to boycott the handing over ceremony of the draft resolution report to the Foreign Ministers in protest of the interference by British State Minister Hugo Swire.

Meanwhile Australian Foreign Minister, British and Indian Foreign Secretaries who arrived in the country for the CHOGM have met a group of TNA representatives this afternoon.

TNA MP Suresh Premachandran told our news team that several issues including the resettlement in the North were discussed during the meeting.

Prince Charles and a large number of Government leaders to the island today.

Heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, is scheduled to arrive in the island today to participate in CHOGM.

Prince Charles is thus participating in CHOGM representing Queen Elizabeth the Second.

Accordingly the chairmanship of CHOGM held in Sri Lanka will also lie with Prince Charles.

Before coming to Sri Lanka Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall Camila Parker are currently engaged in a tour in India.

The 65th birthday Prince Charles falls today.

In addition, British Prime Minister David Cameron, Australian Premier Tony  Abbot and Malaysian and Pakistani Prime Ministers are scheduled to arrive in the island today. 

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia, Julie Bishop arrived in Sri Lanka for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2013 beginning in Colombo, Sri Lanka, this week.

Meanwhile, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa, Maite Nkoana also arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Dipu Moni arrived last morning for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2013 beginning in Colombo, Sri Lanka, this week.

Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody welcomed the Minister of Finance and Development Planning of Botswana, Kenneth Matambo at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, as he arrived yesterday.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, Ambassador Kwesi Quartey arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday as well.
