A special meeting between commonwealth heads of government will be held today as well in Battaramulla, where special attention will be paid to issues faced between countries.


Yesterday the 1st and 2nd executive sessions of the Commonwealth heads of government meeting were held at the BMICH during which issues faced by small countries as well as matters relating to international trade were discussed.


Following yesterday’s meeting a special dinner was held for the delegates with the patronage of Price Charles.

CHOGM 2013 begins with Sri Lanka chairing the summit

The 1st and 2nd executive sessions of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting were held this afternoon at the BMICH subsequent to the inauguration ceremony held at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapakse Theater.

State leaders and representatives of all countries were present for these two sessions except the British Premier David Cameron.

The sessions began after President Mahinda Rajapakse assumed duties as the chairman of the summit.

Discussions were centred on topics such as challenges faced by small states, the role of civil society in development, participation of youth in development and international trade.

Following the conclusion of the 1st executive session the executive committee of the Commonwealth Youth Council including its chairman met with the state leaders taking part in CHOGM.

The state leaders taking part in CHOGM were updated regarding topics discussed during the Commonwealth Youth Summit which was held in Hambantota over 5 days.

An epistle bearing proposals that were passed during the youth summit was also handed over to the heads of government present.

Subsequently the topics discussed and the proposals put forth by the youth council were discussed during the 2nd executive session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

A press conference has been scheduled for this evening to notify the press regarding what was discussed during the 1st and 2nd executive sessions today under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapakse and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma.

Meanwhile, Heir to the British throne, His Excellency Prince Charles visited the National Museum after taking part in the first executive session.

The ministry of external affairs reported that a dinner for the heads of state who are in the country for CHOGM 2013 has been organized by Prince Charles tonight.

Meanwhile, a special meeting between state leaders has been scheduled in Battaramulla tomorrow.

22nd Commonwealth Summit declared open in Colombo

The 22nd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting began today at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapakse Theatre this morning.


President Mahinda Rajapakse and the First Lady arrived at the Nelum Pokuna premises at approximately 9.15 this morning which was followed by the arrival of the Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma and his spouse.


Next to arrive was the current chairman of the Commonwealth, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot and he was followed by state leaders and diplomats who are taking part in CHOGM 2013.


These state leaders were welcomed by the first lady, Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh and Australian Premier Tony Abbot.


The last to arrive was the Prince of Wales, His Excellency and Heir to the British throne Prince Charles.


Presidents from Nauru, Samoa, Cyprus, Tanzania, Rwanda, Seychelles and South Africa of the Commonwealth have arrived in the country to take part in CHOGM 2013.


In addition, 5 vice presidents, 13 prime ministers, 33 foreign ministers and 9 diplomats representing the member nations of the Commonwealth have arrived in Sri Lanka to take part in the summit.


After the conclusion of the CHOGM inauguration, the Commonwealth Heads of Government will be escorted in a decorated vehicle parade to the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall to participate in the main executive session of the summit.


During the main sessions, Present Commonwealth Chairman and Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott will hand over the Commonwealth Chair to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.


Later Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma will host lunch for the Heads of Government.


After lunch, Heads of Government will have a discussion with the Commonwealth Youth leaders.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa inaugurates Commonwealth summit

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that the goal of the Commonwealth is to build cooperation among the member nations and mutually help themselves.


Expressing his views during the inaugural address to the Commonwealth this morning President Rajapaksa said that the Commonwealth should give priority to eliminate common poverty first rather than common wealth


The President also expressed his views on the economic goals that Sri Lanka achieved after the war.

CHOGM heads of government meeting declared open by Prince Charles

The 22nd Commonwealth heads of government meeting was declared open by Prince Charles at Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa theatre a short while ago.

President Mahinda Rajapakse warmly welcomed Prince Charles and Camila Parker, the duchess of Cornwall.

After the inauguration of CHOGM, the first session is scheduled to be held at the BMICH with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the chair.

The inauguration of the 22nd CHOGM will take place today.

That will be at the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa theatre and under the chairmanship of heir to the British throne, Prince Charles.

Heads of Government of 23 countries have already arrived in the island to participate in it.

After the inauguration of CHOGM, the first session is scheduled to be held at the BMICH with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the chair.

Prince Charles arrived in the island last afternoon to participate in CHOGM.

Prince Charles also met President Mahinda Rajapaksa at President’s House last night.

The President’s Media Unit said that a celebration in view of Prince Charles’ 65th birthday which fell yesterday had also been organised at President’s House.

On this occasion a special birthday cake structure had also been prepared on behalf of Prince Charles.
