Video: Australian Prime Minister praises Sri Lanka's progress

Sunday, 17 November 2013 - 12:50

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abott said that Sri Lanka has achieved much progress and more freedom and prosperity has dawned upon the country.

The Premier also stated that Australia would give Sri Lanka two patrol boats to tackle people-smuggling operations in the Indian Ocean, hoping they can detect vessels before they leave the Asian nation's waters.

The decision comes with the Tony Abbott-led government ramping up efforts to deter asylum-seekers arriving on unauthorised boats, a sensitive political issue that was a dominant factor in September elections.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abott said that progress has been made through the LLRC and stated that it was important to engage Sri Lanka constructively.
