Update : 56 Sri Lankans arrested in India for gold smuggling racket.
56 Sri Lankans who engaged in a massive gold smuggling racket between Sri Lanka and India have been arrested.
Indian media reported that this gold racket was centered among Colombo, Cochin and Chennai.
23 kilo grams of gold worth 60 million rupees have been seized on 3 occasions.
28 women and 14 men with 21 kilo grams of gold in their possession were arrested at the Cochin airport.
Following interrogation, another 14 Sri Lankans who have traveled several times between Sri Lanka and India last September were also arrested.
This is recorded as the first occasion during which a large number of Sri Lankans were arrested in connection with a gold smuggling racket in India.
The Times of India also reported that the Sri Lankan High Commission in India has submitted a report with regard to the incident.

56 Sri Lankans held for smuggling gold
The long-suspected international gold smuggling racket centred on the Colombo-Kochi-Chennai axis was dramatically confirmed yesterday, when the air intelligence unit of Cochin International Airport apprehended two groups of Sri Lankan nationals who arrived in the city with around 11 kg of gold ornaments worth more than 30 million rupees.
Yesterday morning, air intelligence unit seized 10 kg of crude gold ornaments from 42 Sri Lankan nationals of whom 28 were women.
In the evening, another 1.733 kg of gold was seized from 14 Sri Lankan nationals, one of them a woman.
