A team of software engineers led by a Sri Lankan, Nimesha Ranasinghe has created a digital electrode that can simulate the tastes of sweet, sour, salty and bitter foods.

Some signals sent by the digital electrode can reproduce these tastes and they are transmitted through a silver electrode that's touching the tip of the tongue.

Users have to lick a piece of metal to achieve the tastes.

Future applications may include gamers being able to taste the sweet rewards on their screens, or cancer patients being able to improve their sense of taste during chemotherapy.

The team is also working on a "digital lollipop" that delivers a continuous sugar hit without the actual sugar, perhaps the most exciting potential application for the masses.
