Video : Peliyagoda Urban Council budget defeated for the second time - Chairman loses position

Next year’s budget of for the Peliyagoda Urban Council was defeated for a second time by 3 votes.

3 out of the 6 Urban Councillors who represent the government had voted against the proposed budget along with the 3 from the opposition.

The budget was defeated by 3 votes the first time it was presented on the 19th as well.

Our news team inquired from the mayor of the Peliyagoda Urban Council Nihal Ananda regarding the proposed budget being defeated for a second time.

Speaking to our news team UPFA Urban Councillor Sarath De Silva stated that 3 Urban Councillors representing the government including himself voted against the budget again for the second time in order to show protest against the Mayor.

According to the Special Provisions Act regarding Local Government Institutions passed last year, if a proposed budget is defeated for a second time in a local government institute, the chairman of that local government institute has to resign.

Only the proposed budget of the Peliyagoda Urban Council has been defeated in its second vote thus far.

Accordingly our news team inquired from the Western Provincial Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga as to what steps the Peliyagoda Urban Council will take in this regard.
