The Presidential Commission for probing complaints about disappearances says that it is not prepared to hasten investigations about disappearances according to outside pressures.

Participating at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday, Commission Chairman retired High Court Judge Maxwell Paranagama said that time was required for probing the relevant complaints.

On the 13th of August 2013 President Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed the commission to investigate disappearances in the North and East between the 10th of June 1990 and 19th May 2009.

The number of complaints lodged with the relevant commission is recorded at 11,000 by now.

Most complaints to the commission regarding disappearances in the North and Eastern provinces were from the Kilinochchi and Mullaitiv districts.

In addition this Commission has received nearly 6000 inquiries regarding disappearances of members of the three armed forces.

The Presidential Commission for probing complaints regarding disappearances said that visiting the relevant district and carrying out investigations about all these complaints would begin from next January.

But the Commission Chairman retired High Court Judge Maxwell Paranagama said that time was required for this.

Meanwhile the Census and Statistics Department has decided to carry out an island-wide census for gathering information about deaths, injuries and property damages from today.

The Department’s Additional Director General Dr. Amara Satharasinghe told our news team that this census would be conducted taking into account varied turbulent situations that arose from 1982 up to now.
