Six Buddhist monks have commenced a hunger strike near the clock tower in Mawanella since this morning.

The monks are protesting against authorities for not taking measures to protect the Dewanagala religious site in Mawanella.

According to these Buddhist monks, intruders are carrying out illegal mining and construction activities in the premises.

The theros also claim that this is a security risk to the religious site and that it also damages the archaeological value of the location.

Although our news team attempted to contact the Director General of the Archaeological Department Prof. Senerath Paranawithana it was to no avail as he was attending a meeting at the time.
