The government’s decision to hold a census on the lost life and property during the civil war has been applauded by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma.

The Secretary General has also stated that this census would enhance the implementation of the LLRC recommendations of post war reconciliation process.

The census will ascertain the number of people died, injured, disappeared and disabled; and property damaged or destroyed in the civil war from 1982.

The Commonwealth believes that the census will obtain true information from the family members of the victims and the witnesses in compiling such information in order to ensure accurate data.

Kamalesh Sharma also believed that the outcome of the census will be announced without delay, and such information will reveal the true incidents that occurred in the past.

He said the census details will be helpful to get the affected parties into a reconciliation process.

Meanwhile, the special representative of the United Nations in Geneva on the Internally Displaced Persons arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday on a five-day official visit to examine the overall situation of IDPs in the country.

During his visit the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons Dr. Chaloka Beyani will meet with representatives from the Sri Lankan government, civil society and the UN, among others.

Secretary to the Ministry of Resettlement Janaka Sugathadasa said the Special Rapporteur this morning met Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa at the parliamentary complex.
