A group of shunting drivers attached to the Dematagoda Water Power Running Station launched a strike in protest of the interdiction of an Engine driver and his assistant after a railway engine ran for 15 kilometers without a driver early this morning.

However the secretary of the Shunting drivers union K A Premakumara stated that the strike was called off this evening following a discussion with the railway administration.

A train engine, which was at the Demtagoda Railway Yard had automatically started at around 1.45 am today and proceeded without a driver before it was stopped between Ratmalana and Mt. Lavinia.

The driver and assistant of the train engine have been interdicted with immediate effect.

General Manger of railways B A P Ariyrathna said a three-member technical team has been appointed to investigate the incident.

However secretary of the Shunting drivers union K A Premakumara states that it is not the fault of the engine driver.

Railway shunting drivers go on wild-cat strike

A group of shunting drivers attached to the Dematagoda Water Power Running Station has launched a strike in protest of the interdiction of an Engine driver and his assistant after a railway engine ran for 15 kilometers without a driver early this morning.

The Convener of the Joint Railway Front Sampath Rajitha said that if they do not get a solution by this evening, other shunting drivers have also decided to join the strike.

He said that there would be a delay in running the normal trains due to these union actions.

They said, no one was injured in the incident and the train engine is parked at the Ratmalana railway station now.
