98 fishermen arrested by India within 13 days

The Indian Coast Guard has arrested 16 Sri Lankan fishermen for allegedly fishing illegally in Indian waters.

The latest arrest of 16 fishermen brings the total of Sri Lankan fishermen arrested within the last 13 days to 98.

In a statement the coastal security agency said it apprehended the Sri Lankan fishermen on December 05th in a coordinated sea-air operation and seized their three fishing boats.

Meanwhile, 59 more Sri Lankan fishermen who were arrested have been remanded in India till the 20th.

Deputy Minister of Fisheries Sarath Kumara Gunarathna stated that diplomatic channels are active to secure their release.
