Yasushi Akashi, the representative of the Government of Japan for Peace-Building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sri Lanka arrived in the island yesterday for a six-day official visit.

Following the successful conduct of the first Northern Provincial Council Elections in Sri Lanka, which was welcomed by Japan as a significant step forward in the national reconciliation process, the Government of Japan has decided to dispatch Yasushi Akashi.

Akashi met Minister of External Affairs Professor G.L. Pieris this morning in order to discuss and share bilateral relations between the two countries.  

During his stay Akashi will call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa, government officials and representatives of opposition parties as well as members of civil societies.

This is Akashi's 23rd visit to Sri Lanka since he assumed the post in 2002.

Yashush Akashi in the island tonight

Yasushi Akashi, the representative of the Government of Japan for Peace-Building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sri Lanka is to arrive in the island this evening for a six-day official visit.

A meeting is scheduled between Professor G.L. Peiris and Yasushi Akashi, at 11.30 a.m. tomorrow.
