Parliament convened today at 9.30 this morning under the patronage of speaker Chamal Rajapakse.

During the committee stage debate, the government vehemently opposed a private member’s motion presented by UNP MP Wjeydasa Rajapakse.

Chief Government Whip Minister Dinesh Gunawardena stated that according to standing orders such a private members motion cannot be presented to parliament.

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe then queried as to what standing order the Chief Opposition Whip was referring to, when opposing this private member’s motion.

Elaborating further Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickramasinghe stated that the bill was created according to Latimer House Charter of the Commonwealth.

He also requested for a vote in parliament to pass the bill.

In response Speaker Chamal Rajapakse stated that the matter will be analyzed further and a decision will be taken whether a debate in this regard will be held or not.
