Indian media reported that a rift has been developed between the Central Government and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha Jeyaram over the arrests of Indian fishermen encroaching into Sri Lankan waters.

The Times of India pointed out that the strategy of the Central government is to bring a solution to the fishermen issue while safeguarding the bi-lateral relations between the two countries.

At the same time, the opinion of the Manmohan Singh’s government is that a lasting solution could be found through a dialogue between the Palk Strait Fishermen’s Associations of both countries.

The newspaper also reported that the Prime Minister has mentioned the Central Government opinion towards the Palk Strait Fishermen issue in its several reply letters to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in the past.

Sources pointed to a series of letters written by Singh to the Chief Minister earlier, one on June 6th in which Singh wrote that this meeting "could also serve as a basis for finding a solution to this issue involving the socio-economic well-being and livelihood security of fishermen living in the coastal areas of the two countries.

The Prime Minister also made it clear in this letter that India considered its maritime boundary with Sri Lanka settled under agreements signed in 1974 and 1976.
