Group of fishermen protest near Thoppuwa Bridge
A group of fishermen staged a protest near Thoppuwa Bridge, Vennappuwa today, saying that the Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne is not intervening to release the captive fishermen in India.
They urged to intervene and release the fishermen who have been under captivity for more than a month.
The traffic along Colombo – Chilaw road was hindered by the protest.
However, the fishermen were dispersed from the location after the Deputy Fisheries Minister Sarath Kumara Gunaratne arrived and explained matters.
He further stated that measures will be taken to discuss with the President and resolve the matter.
Meanwhile, the protest staged by fishermen in Rameshwaram urging to release Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan Navy still continues.
Indian media sources reported today that some of these protesters have been fasting.
