Video: Group of Sri Lankan youth prevents international ship from sinking
A group of Sri Lankan Youth have managed to conduct repairs on a large tanker vessel that was marooned due to a water leak and was at the risk of sinking.
The tanker named, Teresa Atlantic capable of transporting 43 thousand metric tons of oil, flying the colours of Tuvalu was marooned approximately 15 nautical miles off the coast of Galle due to water leaking into the engine room on the 4th of last month.
Several of the youth from Galle who engaged in repairing the tanker stated that the depth of the sea where the tanker was marooned was approximately 400 meters.
However, the owners of the ship and the crew had requested from Sri Lanka and several other international maritime firms to assist in removing water from the engine room.
Chathura Lenin Kudachchi, who lead the group of youth who conducted repairs on the tanker stated that the repairs were carried out utilizing an underwater welding method.
