4 storey warehouse in Pettah storing expired goods to be released to the market raided
The 4 storey warehouse in Pettah which was raided by the Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council is still being inspected.
The PHD of the Colombo Municipal Council stated that more than 10 thousand varieties of dry food items belonging to approximately 25 brands have been discovered thus far.
Chief Medical Officer of the CMC Pradeep Kariyawasam stated that several small warehouses within the complex are yet to be searched.
However the exact value of the food items found have not been determined yet, although initial estimates puts the value in excess of millions of rupees.
Large amounts of expired food items ready to be sold to the market were discovered in several regions in the recent past.
12 thousand 500 kilograms of expired powdered milk worth in excess of 80 million rupees was discovered in the Welisara region recently.
In addition 8000 kilograms of expired powdered chilli was discovered stored in a factory in the Mabola region and another 5000 kilograms of potatoes unfit for consumption was discovered in a warehouse close to the Dambulla Economic Centre.
